Ode to Dad

There once was a nonagenarian
Who would have made a good parliamentarian
Although blue through and through
He could be liberal too
So really more of a Conservatarian

Born in India, sent to study at Sherborne
Joined the Sappers and suddenly he was airborn
Went to Cambridge, read law
Why? I’m really not sure
For to direct marketing he was drawn

Whilst a Cantab he met a French lady
Fell in love, then got wed, had a baby
Then another, then a third
His very own small herd
Born to carry on the Angwin name maybe

Much was to happen in the years that followed
In Paris, and long after, he sorrowed
But found himself again
Helping MC through pain
Then their two families together they sewed

Trying to choose a single memory
Is quite hard when there are so many
But of one I’m most fond
As it strengthened our bond
Is the debates had as a family

One example: I recall he would say
That the monarchy had had its day
”Twenty years from now
It’ll have taken a bow
and the pomp will have all gone away”

How could he know Liz would go on so long?
Not just that, she still attracts quite a throng
Probably Charlie won’t make it
What with Harry trying to break it
So it may just be the timing dad got wrong

Still, I think it’s quite apt and funny
That it was on ER’s 70th Jubilee
Yes, on that very day
We all gathered to say
Happy birthday Grandpa/Colin/daddy!
